What's Wrong With Pay-for-Performance
There's a lot of money in financial incentives. Hoards of people are clearly interested in reading - and writing - about financial incentives. Numerous consulting companies sell advice about designing incentive systems that attract, retain, and motivate employees. Human resource executives devote huge chunks of time to designing pay systems and dealing with complaints about compensation. Compensation committees of boards of directors devote endless hours to incentives for senior executives, allegedly to align the interests of executive officers with the long-term interests of the company's stockholders. These tremendous efforts to get the pay system right are guided by several deeply held and intertwined beliefs about what motivates people in the workplace.
