Dutch Can Try Genocide Suspect - Rwanda2006-08-11BBC Monitoring AfricaText of report in English by Rwandan radio on 11 August A Rwandan migrant who was arrested yesterday by Dutch police has been charged with war crimes and torture for his alleged role in the 1994 genocide. Prosecutors in The Hague identified the man as Joseph Mambara [phonetic] and said he is the brother of another man identified only as Obed Ruzindana who has been convicted of genocide by International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda and sentenced to 25 years in prison. Prosecution spokesman at The Hague, Desiree Leppens said the suspect who appeared before a court in The Hague last evening will be tried in The Netherlands and faces a maximum life sentence if he is convicted. In an interview with Radio Rwanda, the prosecutor-general, Martin Ngoga said that Mahambara is alleged to have been part of the extremist [Hutu] militias known as the Interehamwe who had [words indistinct] slaughter in slaying more than one million lives. He added that Mambara was on the list of the 93 top wanted perpetrators still at large. Mr Martin Ngoga appreciated The Netherlands' initiative and further urged other countries where there were genocide suspects to follow the suit.
