Macedonian PM Assures ICTY Officials of Government Readiness to Cooperate2006-09-14BBC Monitoring EuropeanText of report in English by Macedonian state news agency MIA The Hague, 14 September: Macedonia and the Hague tribunal will intensify the cooperation, which will result in enforcement of Law on Tribunal Cooperation in due time and will work on the return of the four cases [involving Macedonian citizens suspected of war crimes], said PM Nikola Gruevski after the meetings Thursday [14 September] with ICTY [International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia] President Fausto Pocar and Chief Prosecutor Carla Del Ponte, MIA reports. I appreciate that the new prime minister came to visit us. This is important in order to resume the cooperation. We've talked about the transfer of the four cases and I'm pleased because he said he would do whatever is necessary to accept and process the cases in Macedonia, said Carla Del Ponte after the meeting. PM Gruevski said that the main objective of the meetings with Pocar and Del Ponte was to demonstrate the government's readiness for full cooperation with the tribunal and to provide access to the prosecution and defence, thus enabling the judges to reach the right decision. We've informed the Hague prosecution that the government is preparing Law on Tribunal Cooperation and it is ready to resume and to reinforce cooperation with the court. We've talked about the return of the four cases, their acceptance and processing, said PM Gruevski. Macedonia has to be adequately prepared in order to accept the cases, which includes judges' and prosecutors' training, new laws to be passed and new courtroom. There will be access to Interior and Defence Ministries' archives and also Macedonian prosecutor will be appointed, who will coordinate the Hague court's cooperation. Gruevski and Del Ponte also discussed about the cases of Ljube Boskovski and Johan Tarculovski. Del Ponte said that no decision was reached regarding the beginning of the trial. PM Gruevski will visit Boskovski and Tarculovski Thursday afternoon in the Scheveningen prison. (c) 2006 BBC Monitoring European. Provided by ProQuest Information and Learning. All rights Reserved.
