Kenyan Government Spokesman Denies Rwandan Genocide Fugitive in Country2006-09-28BBC Monitoring AfricaText of report by Kenyan Capital FM radio on 28 September [Presenter] The government has dismissed allegations that the most wanted Rwandan genocide suspect Felicien Kabuga is hiding in Kenya. [Government] Spokesman Alfred Mutua says allegations by the visiting prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda is just propaganda. [ICTR prosecutor] Hassan [Bubacar] Jallow has told government officials that all intelligence details point to Kabuga being in the country and that there is evidence that he moves between Eldoret, Nairobi and Mombasa. [Mutua] I know about the allegations being made by the special prosecutor and we are saying that as far as the government is aware, Kabuga is not in Kenya. This government has no reason to shield Felicien Kabuga as speculated by some people. Making allegations that the wanted war criminal has bribed officials to hide him is simplistic. [Presenter] Kabuga allegedly helped finance the 1994 genocide which claimed the lives of nearly one million Tutsis and moderate Hutus, according to Rwandan government estimates. The US government has offered a reward of up to 450m shillings [6.2m dollars] for information leading to his arrest. [Mutua] It would be of great benefit for any Kenyan to report his whereabouts and receive this hefty reward. We are talking about 400m Kenya shillings. I mean, just give me half of that and I will retire. Whisper to me, maybe I will split the 400m shillings with you. For heavens sake, people still argue that Usamah Bin-Ladin is in Pakistan or Afghanistan or wherever he is and they have not been able to track him and catch him. [Presenter] The prosecutor is in the country leading a delegation from the tribunal to meet Kenyan authorities over the issue. (c) 2006 BBC Monitoring Africa.
